Collecting Unemployment Track Your Job Search Efforts

Collecting Unemployment Track Your Job Search EffortsCollecting Unemployment? Track Your Job Search EffortsCollecting Unemployment Track Your Job Search EffortsFor most, being unemployed sucks. Instead of spending your days doing your job, you spend your days job searching...and searching...and searching some more. Oy, how exhaustingBut since job searching alone can be hard work, you might as well get paid for it, right? Collecting unemployment benefits these days is more common than ever, especially when mass layoffs are the cause and people have mortgages to pay and families to support. If youre considering collecting unemployment benefits from your state, its important to note that its not a free ride to get there. Your state may have different rules and regulations, but here in Massachusetts you have to provide proof of all your job search efforts in order to collect your checks. They may not ask for records all the time, but you must have written proof of your job search efforts ready if the state requests them.In fact, Massachusetts law requires you to do three things each week to remain eligible for benefitsMake a minimum of three work search contacts in each week that benefits are claimed.Keep a written log of those work search contacts.Provide a work search log to teilen of Unemployment Assistance upon request. To make things even stricter, youre required to write everything in the program-provided Worksearch Activity Log (they wont accept any other form). Here are some suggestions to help you keep track of your effortsPin the Worksearch Activity Log to your refrigerator door so youre forced to look at it several times a day.Save receipts and notes from meetings or networking opportunities, then write them down on the form as soon as you get home.Use online tools (likes Tracker and TaskManager) to log all your job search activities and communications, from submitting resumes and making phone calls, to storing interview times and contact names, so you can easily fill in the form when the state agency requests it.The point is, you cant just sit on your couch day after day collecting unemployment you have to be a proactive job seeker, and you have to have the records to prove it. Its in your and the governments best interest to constantly search for new opportunities. They dont want to pay benefits forever, and you want to return to a real paycheck, rather than the partial sum the government will give you. But meanwhile, that partial sum is a source of income you dont want to lose, so be sure to follow your states unemployment guidelines until you find your next job. What other ways do you stay organized while hunting for a job? How are you handling unemployment?

Where Are the Entry Level Jobs

Where Are the Entry Level JobsWhere Are the Entry Level JobsYou spent four years focused in college earning that degree with a clear pathway in sight walking off campus straight into your dream job. Why is it then that so many new graduates are living at home with their parents and areworking odd jobs justto make a semblance of a living? Yes, the anemic economy is a contributingfactor. However, just as important, if not mora critical, is the lack of knowledge of where the jobs are and how to find them. Candidates armed with the right information and with access to help in crafting a job search strategy are having greatersuccess. In fact, entry-level hiring has actually been one of the fastest growing sectors of the job market. The challenge is that the market for entry-level professional positions is highly inefficient, asthe new grad job seeker and hiring companies have difficulty finding each other. This is due, in part, to structural changes in when and how new grads look for jobs . At the same time, while the availability of entry-level jobs is improving, these jobs are much more difficult for new grads to identify as many entry-level positions are not advertised.Historically, large employers have been the driving force behind college recruiting, as they possess the resources to maintain large college recruiting efforts, hire in large numbers and provide centralized training. However, with a challenging economic environment, many of these programs have been reduced or eliminated. Despite recent economic improvement, larger companies have been cautious in hiring, focused on productivity and maximizing earnings.Gradstaff, a new college graduate staffing tafelgeschirr, has increasingly seen hiring at the entrys of high paying positions in strong demand include claims trainee, health care member advocate, associate credit analyst, social media analyst, property accountant, etc. A combination of factors contributesto strength in new grad hiring among small and me dium-sized companies. First, many mature, profitable companies are dealing with significant demographic trends. Industries including insurance, health care, commercial real estate, logistics and many others have older age profiles and face the loss of baby-boomers to retirement in the next 10 years. These companies must hire more at the entry-level now in order to prepare for the loss of key performers. Second, almost all companies are seeking people with strong technology skills regardless of the position. New grads typically have the technology skills that companies are seeking. While small and medium companies are hiring, what they arent doing is finding these grads on campus. Simply put, they just dont hire enough to justify the investment in a dedicated college recruiting effort. Furthermore, many dont have the brand image of a Google or Accenture, and thus, feel they do not get sufficient attention when recruiting on campus or attending a career fair. As a result, they rely on referrals, both from employees and partners (vendors, clients, etc.), as well as job postings and social media to identify candidates.Once home after graduation, job seekers are on their own, and because they may have delayed looking for a job while on campus, they lack important job search skills and strategies. Many may also lack the knowledge and self-awareness to know where their majors or core skills can be applied in the workplace. As a result, job searches tend to rely heavily on making electronic applications via the internet, increasingly using mobile devices. Commonly, this approach is unsuccessful due to lack of focus and the difficulty in differentiating an entry-level resume. Many experts feel that the key to finding a job is personal networking, which is an underdeveloped skill among recent grads. Due to the growth in electronic forms of communication, job seekers often underestimate the importance of the personal touch. Potential sources include college alumni, former coaches and professors, family friends, so forth.Services like Gradstaff, address this problem by acting as the intermediary between small and medium-sized employers and college grad job seekers. They offer recruiting networks encompassing more than 900 colleges across the U.S. and offer an outsourced college recruiting service to client companies. For job seekers, such services provides skills assessment and career exploration services to help identify potential industries and positions that would fit the candidate. Acting as a matchmaker, this places candidates in professional positions with a focus on long-term retention. While this service does not guarantee placement for all candidates,it tries to give themuseful feedback and coaching that will be helpful in theirjob search. The entry-level job market for college grads is changing. All interested parties job seekers, hiring companies, and colleges must adapt in order to make the entry-level job market more efficient. The good news is that demographic changes and the need for strong technology skills should lead to improved prospects for new college grads.

6 Warning Signs of Pointless Internships

6 Warning Signs of Pointless Internships 6 Warning Signs of Pointless Internships For the past 6 weeks this woman has done some work, but nothing substantial. The firm is small with just a few employees, the majority of whom work remotely. This woman drives 45 minutes three days a week for her so-called internship. Most of the time when she arrives, her anfhrer (the head of the firm) is not even there. And some days her babo fails to show up, leaving the woman with no work to do.Now, she desperately wants to break into the PR field and truly believes in the potential of the company shes interning with. She admitted to me that it could be more organized. And I admitted to her that thats not the only thing this firm is lacking. Were constantly receiving advice on when to jump ship in our 9-5pm jobs, but what about students and internships? Or not even students, but those who have taken on a supposed internship with a company hoping to break into a field? Why dont we offer ansicht types of people the latest tips and tricks on how to spot the its-just-not-working-out signs? Well, Im here to put an end to all of that.Nearly half of college graduates are underemployed and 6.3 percent of 2012 graduates are unemployed. Whats worse is that studies show that businesses only plan to hire 2.1 percent more college graduates from the class of 2013 than they did from the class of 2012.Getting the required skills necessary to obtain full-time employment (and in your degree field) is not something to be taken lightly. And internships are one of the best ways to learn those skills. College students and the inexperienced workers looking switch fields do not have time to work at just any internship- they need to actually benefit from these positions. So, below are six red flags of a faulty internship. Ladies and gentleman, students and inexperienced trying-to-my-foot-in-the-door-workers If you are looking for an internship, be aware of these signs that may show it wont end up being in your best interest. And if youre currently working at an internship, measure its features by this list to determine whether or not you need to jump ship1. No ContractThis is very important. Just as new employees have to sign all the important documents when hired by a company, so should interns sign the correct papers for an internship. You know the saying, Get it in writing. Why? Because writing makes it official.Make sure you have a copy for your records that 1) explains the duration of the internship 2) your duties 3) compensation (if any) and 4) any causes for termination. This helps bring the formality into the internship process. Why is it okay for the young womans boss to show up late or not at all? Because they never made a binding agreement for her internship. It welches only talked about. Having written documents helps set things in stone.2. Getting food/running personal errandsAs an intern you are not your bosss personal assistant I dont care what you see in the movies . Being at your bosss beck and call, buying his/her lunch and running the persons personal errands is not your job. Your job as an intern is to contribute to the company while gaining knowledge and insight to help you in your chosen career field.I had the opportunity to work at 7 different internships while in college and not once did my managers ever ask me to buy them lunch. Dont get me wrong I dont think theres anything wrong with you picking your boss up a Starbucks latte or sandwich from the nearby deli if he or she is super busy and asks or if youre already out and your manager requests this. But, this should not be a regular thing or something that is expected of you.3. Doing busy workSure, interns are there to pick up the slack, in a sense, and help with the important tasks other employees just dont have time to fulfill. I understand that, but, just like being the coffee boy/girl this shouldnt be a regular occurrence. The work you do at an internship needs to benefit your fu ture career. If what youre doing is in no way connected to your major or career aspirations, talk to your manager about it. If he or she still gives you busy work, its time to move on.*I understand that most people, especially students, would not want to leave an internship before the required end date. But, remember you having the necessary skills to get a job post-graduate is crucial. You do not have time to waste doing something that isnt benefiting your career. If you decide to leave an internship early you can 1) leave it off your resume (especially if you were only there for a short period of time) or 2) explain how the internship didnt help you excel during your next interview.4. Not doing enough workThis is similar to point no.3. Again, an internship should offer you real-world experience. It should challenge you. If you find yourself sitting idle, ask your manager for more tasks. Doing nothing (even if youre getting paid) will not help your future because youll be missing o ut on the opportunity to acquire important skills.5. Manager isnt interested in career growthThe main thing I appreciate from each of my internships (and what benefited me the most) was the fact that each of my managers were invested in my career growth. Every single one of them set out to make sure I took away all the necessities as I worked. They constantly asked for my ideas and feedback and monitored my strengths and weaknesses throughout the internships. The acted as mentors, always looking out for my best interest.Interns need managers who not only care about what they can do for the company, but what the company and experience interning there can do for the interns careers.6. Unorganized/no structureA unorganized internship program is a definite red flag. Just like you wouldnt want to work for a company that lacks structure in its different processes, you should avoid the same thing when interning.

Dos and Donts of Firing a Friend

Dos and Donts of Firing a FriendDos and Donts of Firing a FriendFiring an employee is one of the most difficult responsibilities of being in management. Its even more unpleasant when the person is a workplace friend. If you find yourself in that awkward situation as a finance and accounting manager with friendships at work, keep in mind these ways of doing it right - and wrong.DONT shy away from your responsibilitiesPerformance reviews and disciplinary meetings can be a problem employees last chance to turn things around, or the first stage of the firing process. It may be difficult to speak with a workplace friend you believe is falling short on the job. But even toxic employees would get warnings about poor behavior and low performance, and your friend deserves the same courtesy. Otherwise, you dont give your friend the chance to improve, and you risk firing him or her unfairly, which could lead to resentment - and possibly litigation.DO hold a formal meetingYoure the boss. In all other settings, you may be a friend. But when breaking the news about a job loss, you must maintain the employer-employee relationship. Follow normal protocol by holding a meeting, and invite the HR manager to be an impartial witness. This approach will keep things professional. If the employee is being fired for performance failings, have your employees file on hand to discuss the cause of termination.DONT be casualFiring anyone is a serious situation, so treat it as such. Dont try to put a friendly spin on things, and dont use humor. If you approach the meeting with a casual manner, your friend may bedrngnis fully understand the consequences - or may be upset that youre not taking the job loss seriously. Plan what youre going to say in advance, and perhaps even practice it a few times. Then get to your point quickly once the meeting starts.Start by explaining the reasons for your decision, whether its downsizing or performance. Outline any help thats available when searching for new work, including references and severance packages. But be genuine, and dont make promises you cant keep. Expect this to be an emotional moment for your friend, who might not be able to take in many details. So stick to the basics, and offer to answer questions now or in the future.DONT get somebody else to do itFiring a friend will almost certainly cause you sleepless nights, but making difficult decisions are part of an accounting managers job description. If you ask someone else to take over your hard choices, youll likely lose the respect of your friend and other members of your team.DO offer to keep in touchIts OK to get back in touch with fired friends outside the office, but they may not want to maintain contact. Thats something youll have to accept. Try emailing from your personal account a few days after your final meeting and say youre sorry things turned out the way they did. Explain that youd like to keep in touch, and then hope the feeling is mutual. No accounting ma nager wants to be in a position of firing anyone, much less a friend. But letting go of team members is an unavoidable part of succeeding in business. It can be painful, but always stay professional, and do your best to handle the situation with grace, not guilt. Richard Laudenat Begins his Presidential Term at the ASME Annual Meeting

Richard Laudenat Begins his Presidential Term at the ASME Annual Meeting Richard Laudenat Begins his Presidential Term at the ASME Annual Meeting Richard Laudenat Begins his Presidential Term at the ASME Annual Meeting Richard Laudenat, the new president of ASME, discussed his goals for his term as the Society̢۪s 138th president during the President̢۪s Dinner on June 4 at the ASME Annual Meeting. In his inaugural address earlier this month at the Presidents Dinner at the Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., ASMEs new President Richard Laudenat shared some of his goals for his yearlong term as ASMEs 138th president and talked about the importance of the Societys mission-based programs to ensuring a thriving future for both ASME and the engineering profession. (Left to right) ASME immediate Past President Said Jahanmir congratulates new President Richard Laudenat at the President̢۪s Dinner. Laudenat stressed that ASME must continue to adhere to its mission and vision, continue to evaluate and respond to global trends, and persist in building upon and developing programs based on the five strategic technologies approved by the Board of Governors robotics, bioengineering, clean energy, manufacturing and pressure technology in order to position itself as a leader in innovation and global development. ASME must also remain dedicated to encouraging diversity and inclusion, in both the organization and the wider profession, Laudenat added. It is through an effective diversity and inclusion strategy that we will expand and excel in finding new and innovative solutions from within our ranks, while we build on a culture of acceptance, inclusion, professionalism and respect for all, he said during the dinner, which was held June 4 at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes. Laudenat went on to emphasize the significance of various ASME programs that support the Societys mission, such as ASME Engineering Festivals (E-Fests), the INSPIRE digital STEM courses for middle and high school students; the Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) global competition highlighting engineering for social impact; Engineering for Change (E4C); and the ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE), which offers early career engineers the opportunity to learn first-hand about ASME at the leadership level. Its essential that we understand the values that our mission-focused programs bring to ASME, Laudenat said. We also need robust and scrutable ways to measure and evaluate them. To that end, ASME has begun the first stage of a new Social Return on Investment (SROI) initiative, which will enable the Society to measure the long-range impact of its social responsibility initiatives. During his speech at the President̢۪s Dinner, immediate Past President Said Jahanmir touched on some of the endeavors that had taken place during his term. Toward the end of his speech, Laudenat identified several strategic areas in which he hopes the Society continues to make strides during the coming year. These include developing a persuasive membership proposition to increase the number of active ASME members, particularly early career engineers and students; encouraging collaboration between ASMEs volunteers and staff; and upholding the Societys current standing in standards and conformity assessment, conferences and events, technical publications, student competitions, honors and awards, and other areas. One of the most promising opportunities for ASME, Laudenat continued, was in Learning Development. ASME is beginning a transition from a traditional knowledge organization to a learning organization, he said. Think about the possibilities here for ASME and the new generation of learners entering the engineering profession each year. Together we can accomplish so much, resulting in transformational impact for engineers in every corner of the world. (Left to right) ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile, immediate Past President Said Jahanmir, ASME President Richard Laudenat, Past President Charla Wise and President-Nominee Bryan Erler at the President̢۪s Dinner. Earlier in the program, 2018-2019 President Said Jahanmir looked back at some of ASMEs accomplishments during his presidential term, citing such examples as the development and imminent launch of a new and improved ASME.org website; the publication of 13 new standards and 30 updated standards; the addition of the 31st ASME journal, the ASMEJournal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, which will launch next year; the success of ASME educational outreach programs including INSPIRE, ASME Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) and EFx, which reached more than 122,000 K-12 and university students; the presentation of more than $350,000 in scholarships to students to help ensure the future of the profession; and the Societys continued promotion of professional development by providing education and training to thousands of people through more than 300 live technical courses and e-learning opportunities. Jahanmir also discussed some recent organizational structure changes that support a renewed focus on membership, students, sections and divisions. These changes, based on recommendations from the four Presidential Task Forces and approved by the Board of Governors at its April meeting, include the formation of the new Member Development and Engagement (MDE) Sector to provide governance for sections, student sections and membership development; and the renaming and restructuring of the Technical Event and Content Sector, which will now be known as the Technical and Engineering (TEC) Communities Sector. These are just a few examples of what we have accomplished together, Jahanmir said. This is a true confirmation of what we can do if we work together toward a common vision, disseminating technical information to improve safety and the quality of life. It has been a great year, and I promise you that next year will be even more successful than this year. We are on a path of continuous improvement and growth.

Make the Case for a More Flexible Work Schedule -The Muse

Make the Case for a More Flexible Work Schedule -The Muse Make the Case for a More Flexible Work Schedule Would workplace flexibility- whether it’s the option to telecommute one day a week or shift your start time in order to avoid rush-hour traffic- make you a happier, more productive employee? For most of us, the answer is probably a resounding yes. Thanks in large part to technology- like the smartphone you may be reading this article on- there’s really no need for many employees to be working at their desks 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. Increasingly, companies are starting to agree. A recent report found that 67% of small businesses (those with 500 or fewer employees) offer flexible work arrangements, while a 2016 study of 8,000 companies worldwide found that 75% offered flexible work policies. More than ever, employers are paying attention to how, where, and when employees want to work. At Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC), for example, the majority of employees work either a 9/80 schedule (allowing for every other Friday off) or 4/40 schedule (allowing for every Friday off). Employees are also allowed flex time and to telecommute, and some employees even have the option of working part-time. Sounds great, right? But how do you make the case for a more flexible schedule if your company isn’t at the forefront of workplace flexibility? We asked Sharon K., Director, Logistics and Sustainment Engineering at Lockheed Martin MFC for her advice. Sharon K. was one of the company’s earliest adopters of a flex schedule, working part-time for 8 years in the 1990s before returning to a full-time role. Prove Your Worth If a flexible work schedule isn’t a given at your company- and isn’t something that you negotiated during your hiring process- consider taking the time to really prove your worth as an employee before approaching your supervisor with a flexible schedule request. “This is a key component to begin a leader-employee flexible work relationship,” Sharon K. says. “Your odds are better if you’re a trusted employee and have demonstrated sustained top performance.” New hires at Lockheed Martin MFC are asked to spend time in the office working with the division’s subject matter experts to become proficient before working from home. The lesson here: not now doesn’t necessarily mean not ever. Show your face around the office and prove yourself before requesting greater flexibility, and you may just get it. Look Beyond Your Existing Role Don’t limit yourself to just tweaking your current schedule. You may find that there are roles in your company that need to be filled and offer the flexibility you’re looking for. Sharon K. ended up finding an open part-time position that was the right fit. “Lockheed Martin MFC needed someone with my skills, but only had part-time budget,” she says. “There was a hole that needed to be filled,” and she was glad to fill it. “Know where the gaps are in your organization and what you can contribute,” Sharon K. adds. “It’s amazing how much you can learn and contribute to the company when you take those jobs.” In fact, Sharon K. credits her role as a part-timer with helping to broaden her skills. “It really made me a better leader,” she says, “because I’ve worked in so many different areas in my organization that I really understand what everyone does.” Pitch the Benefits to Your Company Sure, you know why you want a flexible work schedule- the ability to spend more time with your kids or less time on your commute- and those are certainly valid reasons. From your boss’ perspective, more important than how a flexible work schedule will benefit you, is how it will benefit your organization. Chances are your company’s leaders already know that workplace flexibility can help attract, engage, and retain talented employees, but you should still be ready to explain how more flexibility will help you to better serve your company. “It’s okay to talk about why you need this, but make sure you’re also saying, 'This is what I can do for you,'” Sharon K. says. Create a Plan, But Be Flexible (Pun Intended) Once you’ve identified how working a flexible schedule can fill an organizational need, be transparent and have a candid conversation with your boss, Sharon K. says. If you’re making the case to telecommute, for example, make a list of what you do now, and which of those tasks can easily be done from home. Acknowledge the days you’ll probably need to be in the office, such as for regularly scheduled meetings, and be willing to adjust your proposed schedule if you know ahead of time that there’s a client meeting. “Come in knowing your end game- what it is you really want,” Sharon K. says. “But you also need to have some flexibility in your flexible work schedule plan. Being rigid can create an issue. You have to go in with the mindset that between you and your leader, you’re going to craft a win-win solution.” Reevaluate the Plan as Necessary A key part of your plan should include a timetable for reevaluating your new schedule. Suggest that you try it for 3 or 6 months, and then meet to discuss what’s working, what’s not, and where you might need to adjust. Sharon K. recalls the case of one employee who went part-time rather than fully retire. “What I found out after 3 months is he actually wanted more work to do. Check-ups make both parties a little more comfortable that there’s an opportunity to assess how the flexible schedule is working. And it may be working just fine, but it gives everyone a safety net.” Remember, flexibility is possible- even if you don’t start out with it- when you prove yourself, create a plan, and have honest conversations with your manager about what you want and how it will benefit the company.

Queen Bee Syndrome is very much alive at work and this is the guilty party

Queen Bee Syndrome is very much alive at work and this is the guilty party Queen Bee Syndrome is very much alive at work and this is the guilty party If you thought Queen Bee Syndrome lived and died when you were in high school, you are wrong. It is very much still alive and probably occurring in your workplace right now.Queen Bee Syndrome is when a woman in a position of power experiences rude behavior from her coworkers, including  demeaning or derogatory remarks, getting ignored or being treated condescendingly. A recent University of Arizona study that was based on three surveys found that it is women who are the main culprits of this incivility towards other women. Mean Girls wasn’t just a movie (and now a Broadway musical!) apparently.Allison Gabriel, assistant professor of management and organizations in the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management and main author of the study, said in a  press release, “Across the three studies, we found consistent evidence that women reported higher levels of  incivility from other women than their male counterparts. In other words, women are ruder to each other than they are to men, or than men are to women.“This isn’t to say men were off the hook or they weren’t engaging in these behaviors,” she noted. “But when we compared the average levels  of incivility reported, female-instigated  incivility was reported more often than male-instigated  incivility by women in our three studies.”Women are the main culprit for incivility towards other womenSo why all the lady harshness? Well, there are a few theories, but Gabriel believes it comes down to competition. At the end of the day, it is always about survival of the fittest whether you are in a cave or a boardroom. “Such women are more likely treated uncivilly by other women at work because they are viewed as violating gender expectations and, perhaps, competing for the same resources,” she wrote in the Journal of Applied Psychology.  And it isn’t just women in lower positions being rude to more successful women, but also women in the power seats giving up-and-comers a hard time. Sele na Rezvani, the VP of Consulting and Research at Be Leaderly, a consulting firm that elevates more women into leadership through assessment, wrote in The Washington Post a few years back that women, especially those at the top levels in their careers, may be experiencing some sort of “sexism amnesia.Ӊ€œThey may forget what it’s like to be junior, to have little sway, and to be underestimated as a young woman. When they finally do get to the top, they adopt the mindset of those around them and gloss over their past struggles,” Rezvani said. “Even harsher is the sink-or-swim school of thought whose club motto is, ‘I was treated like dirt on my way up, so you should be too.’ ”When men defy stereotypes, they are rewarded but it’s the opposite for womenInterestingly though, the surveys found that when men displayed warmth and assertiveness, they experienced less of the rude behavior and incivility from other men in the workplace. This means that when men deviate from t he norm of stereotypical behaviors they are rewarded for it but when women do it they punished for it and by their own sex no less.So what now? Do we all just tolerate working in an office full of Regina Georges? The study found that when this kind of behavior exists in an office culture female employees will exit the company, which can add up to a lot of money for a business.“Companies should be asking, ‘What kinds of interventions can be put in place to really shift the narrative and reframe it?’ ” Gabriel said in the statement. “Making workplace interactions more positive and supportive for employees can go a long way toward creating a more positive, healthier environment that helps sustain the company in the long run.“Organizations should make sure they also send signals that the ideas and opinions of all employees are valued and that supporting others is crucial for business success - that is, acting assertively should not be viewed negatively, but as a positive wa y for employees to voice concerns and speak up,” Gabriel added.

Thinking style How knowing my thinking style helps me advance my career

Thinking style How knowing my thinking style helps me advance my career Thinking style How knowing my thinking style helps me advance my career As an organizational psychologist, I have always been interested in understanding people and behavior. I continually reflect on my own behavior in the same way.Awareness of my individual thinking style -  and how that style relates to others -  has helped me advance my career and be more effective, successful and happy on the job and in my everyday life. You can use many tools to assess your thinking style, personality, and problem-solving approach. These include  the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Hogan Assessment, and Six Thinking Hats. At Kimberly-Clark, we use the  Original Thinkers quiz  to help jobseekers land on one of eight distinct thinking styles and apply this knowledge to their  careers.Understand your  weaknessesBy nature, I am an “adaptor” -  someone who loves exploring every side of an issue, adapting to the latest input, and finding answers to challenging questions. I have always gravitated toward roles where I can help others reflect.  I’m energized when explor ing problems from different angles and perspectives. I enjoy the opportunity to create something new by listening to others and adding my perspective to add value. My thinking style leads me to be calm when things are chaotic or stressful. Give me a tough problem, and I’ll try to tease out the opportunity. I can adjust my approach to focus on what’s important to my co-workers or to the success of a project and lead people to a common goal. By looking at a problem with a new lens, I can often provide a spark to get things done and move project forward. While my highly adaptive and inquisitive personality has helped me thrive in many situations, it creates challenges in others.I struggle when I receive little feedback and information, or when I feel micromanaged. And my ability to continually adapt and adjust when working with others can come across as being overly agreeable or less than steadfast in my opinions. (In fact, I reach conclusions after careful consideration, review, and assessment.)Understanding both sides of the equation -  how my personal thinking style works well in certain situations and less well in others -  has helped me navigate my career and identify roles and projects where I can contribute, grow, and shine.Put your thinking style to workFor instance, after doing something for an extended period of time when there are limited learning opportunities, I know that I have a personal tendency to get bored. I have to remind and coach myself to focus on execution to ensure that details of plans come together as expected and not get side tracked by a new problem to solve.I also know when approaching a new role or problem, I have the ability to look at the problem with a fresh set of eyes or perspective. By knowing myself, I can flex my approach to the situation and ensure my “hows” align with others needs of the team and situation. We spend time thinking about all sorts of things every day: how we’re going to meet that big project deadlin e, organize the next staff meeting, save money for a vacation trip, take care of an aging parent or relative, or reorganize the contents of our closets. We should also give some thought to ourselves. The more you understand yourself, the better you will be able to adjust your approach to ensure you make meaningful connections with others and maximize insights.Leverage your strengthsIf you’re currently employed, you can use self-knowledge to evaluate your present role and discover how you can better leverage your strengths to position yourself for advancement. You can also use this information to enhance relationships with supervisors, work more effectively with co-workers who think differently and present ideas in way that ensures clarity and buy in.If you’re looking for a new opportunity, insights into your personal thinking style will help you identify the types of roles and organizations in which you can contribute and thrive. You’ll even be better prepared for job interview s by understanding the cognitive strengths you bring to a new position.Continue to reassess your strengths throughout your career as your skills and experience grow. A deep understanding of your individual thinking style will help you find more satisfying positions, work with organizations that empower you to maximize your talents  -  and ultimately unleash your full potential.

Actuary and Actuarial Science Careers

Actuary and Actuarial Science Careers Actuary and Actuarial Science Careers An actuary is a highly trained statistician with expertise in evaluating various types of risks. Roughly 60% of actuaries are employed by insurance companies, and play a key role in setting the terms and conditions of insurance policies, including premium rates. An actuary also has career opportunities in pension fund management, forecasting future payouts and determining current contributions and investment policies in light of them. Additionally, actuaries (either in-house or consultants) help companies in all industries design and implement policies and procedures to mitigate risks in various aspects of their operations. Find Job Openings Use this tool to search for current job openings in this field. Education An actuary is expected to have at least a bachelors degree. There is prescribed coursework in statistics or actuarial science (a branch of applied statistics), plus business, finance, and economics. A high degree of computer literacy is increasingly important, especially with regards to software packages commonly used for database and statistical analysis. An MBA can be a useful credential, depending on the firm. Certification The Society of Actuaries (SOA) certifies actuaries in life insurance, retirement plans, and investments. The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) certifies actuaries in property, casualty and liability insurance. Reaching the highest level of certification is a lengthy process, requiring coursework and the passing of nine separate exams normally over the course of six to nine years. Three of the first four exams are common to both the SOA and the CAS tracks, allowing the prospective actuary some time to decide on his or her specialty. Duties and Responsibilities The job of actuary involves detailed analysis of data to quantify risks. It also requires expertise with advanced modeling techniques to forecast future probabilities of various outcomes, such as losses or claims and their expected magnitudes. While technical expertise and quantitative skills are a must, advancement is dependent, to a great degree, on the ability to communicate effectively with managers who lack this background. Do not confuse an actuary with an insurance underwriter, who evaluates applications for insurance, and makes decisions on whether to accept or reject them. An actuary works at a more macro level, setting the high-level parameters that guide insurance underwriters. Typical Schedule The typical actuary works close to a standard 40 hour week, normally from a fixed office location. A consulting actuary tends to have significant travel, and thus may work considerably longer hours. Whats to Like An actuary is a highly respected professional who is an important influencer of company policy, if not a final decision maker. It is a well-compensated field that has a vital, visible impact. Whats Not to Like For those with ambitions to rise in general management, the opportunities may be limited in some companies, which might view an actuary as a narrow specialist. Also, depending on the company and the position, the work of an actuary may become somewhat repetitive and lacking in variety. Salary Range Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual compensation was $93,680 as of May 2012, with 90% earning between $55,780 and $175,330.

Ways to keep your next meeting from going off the rails

Ways to keep your next meeting from going off the rails Ways to keep your next meeting from going off the rails Meetings: You have to live with them in corporate America, which means you can’t live without them. So, when you’re not the one calling the shots, it’s easy to feel like you have no control over how meetings play out - or how long they end up being. Here’s what both managers and employees can do to make the meeting culture easier on everyone.Shut down that person who talks too muchFrancesca Gino, an author and professor at Harvard Business School,  writes in the Harvard Business Review  about a way to cut down on interruptions - to “enlist the group.Ӊ€œIf you’d prefer to avoid embarrassing the interrupter, you can address the whole group without pointing fingers. Ask the group to reflect on whether you are communicating effectively together and what could be improved,” she writes. “This strategy would allow every member, including you, to raise their awareness of challenges facing the group, a first important step in addressing problems like this one.”Does someo ne keep stopping by your desk for a mid-day chat, when you’re knee-deep in all the work you have to do? Try using the FlowLight so others know how you’re doing, and whether or not it’s a good time to come over and talk.Don’t let it go into overtimeHallie Crawford, a certified career coach, author, and founder, writes in U.S. News World Report about how having a brief agenda can help a meeting from going on for too long, and that points can include “your main objective,” the “order of importance of your talking points” and “how much time you should allot for them.Ӊ€œTrying to fit too much material into a meeting is another sure way to run over. Instead of cramming a lot of talking points into one meeting, plan on talking for only half of the allotted time,”Crawford advises.  Ã¢€œFor example, if you have planned a 45-minute meeting, determine which two to three items on your agenda you really need to discuss with your employees, and which items could wait until next time or possibly even be resolved via email.”An agenda is only as useful as you make it, though, so try not to stray from it.Picking up the pieces after a heated exchangeThis happens all the time and can get pretty awkward once the dust settles. After an argument, managers should  take the time to see where both parties are coming from, and what could work for each person going forward. Don’t be afraid to jump in when you feel like things are heading south - just be sure to appear composed and use every word deliberately to moderate the situation that’s unfolding.Soon enough, team members will be onto the next meeting or back at their desks and before you know it, they’ll have moved on from the heated interactions that spiraled out of control during this meeting.

How to look professional and still be frugal with work wardobe

How to look professional and still be frugal with work wardobe How to look professional and still be frugal with work wardobe The workplace can be a tough space to express your sense of style when there are so many unspoken expectations about business-casual wardrobe. Today’s modern office focuses less on dress codes and more on professionalism which can leave a glaring gray area for women trying to piece together appropriate ensembles. When you’re not trying to break the bank but still want to look like your  million dollar worth, handling “professional” attire can feel heavy on your wallet. With these frugal business-casual wear tips, you can keep your budget in check while looking like the future CEO of your company!Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Know your StylesOne of the hardest parts about curating the perfect business-casual closet is the shopping. Not knowing what styles, cuts, patterns, shapes, or pieces you’re after can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Treating every day like an interview will  make planning outfits easier.During your first interview, you put together an outfit that you believed would best represent who you are. They say first impressions are everything, which is why you put so much care into your first interview outfit. Keep that same balance of professionalism and individual spunk going by following that theme.Make sure you have these clothing staples hanging in your closet or folded up in your dresser. Slacks Sweaters Short-sleeve blouses Long-sleeve button-downs Pencil skirt Blazers Knee-length dresses Pointed toe flats or heels Through colors, textures, and patterns, you can still express your individual style with these professional wardrobe staples!Set a budget per pieceIt’s a simple matter of fact within the fashion industry that some pieces of clothing cost more than others. Generally speaking, a pair of slacks will typically run you a higher final cost than a blouse. Setting a budget per piece may seem nit-picky, but it will ensure your budget is always in check. For example, limiting your blazer budget to $50 per blazer ensures that you’re always  staying within your financial means- no matter how tempting that designer blazer from Bergdorf Goodman is!  Shop second-handBusiness-casual attire can be expensive. High-quality items come with price-tags that can rack up an intimidating bill, no matter what your annual salary is! Rather than spending a day at the mall going from shop to shop, take your shopping list to a local thrift store.Second-hand clothing is every bit as good as new clothes. Thrift stores are chock-full of lightly-loved items that come with deeply discounted prices. You could get your hands on high-end designer pieces for under $10 or find some of the  best laptop bags  that previous owners kicked to the curb after a single use!Take your time to sift through the piles and piles of clothing, you’re bound to find a number of hidden treasures that will match the exact professional look you’re going for!Shop the clearance sectionThough it is a lot easier to choose from the clothing on display closer to the entrance of your favorite stores, venturing to the back and pillaging through the  clearance section  could earn you some pretty sweet deals on newly discounted clothes. One of the best and worst things about today’s fashion industry is the speed of seasonal cycles. The pace at which certain pieces go out of style is alarming, but typically works in the bargain-hunters’ favor. Slacks, blouses, blazers, and flats never go out of style in the workplace. Sh opping the sale section should be number one on your list then next time your business-casual wardrobe needs a frugal upgrade.Got a favorite store for business-casual wear? Be sure to sign up for their  e-mail newsletter  so you’re always in the know about when the next sale is happening!Be pickyOne of the most common mistakes women make while shopping is buying clothing that they’re not in love with. We’ve all been there- buying a shirt because it was only $5, or because it paired well with one specific purse. The reality of those  impulse-buy items  is that they never see the light of day. And clothing  confined to closets  serves no one any good. Before swiping your card and walking away with a cart full of new tops and bottoms, sort through each piece and ask yourself just how much you love it. Any piece that is just “eh” will likely sit in your closet, untouched. Make your purchases meaningful and intentional so you’re never wasting a dime.Frugal spending may be dif ficult at first, but with patience and practice, you’ll be well on your way toward a wardrobe full of exciting pieces that perfectly match your go-getter attitude! This article originally appeared on Melissa Blevins. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The Upside to Should You Put Address on Resume

The Upside to Should You Put Address on Resume Just do not forget that these rules aren't set in stone. There are a lot of reasons why you might rather not share your address. In this instance, it's often acceptable to leave your complete address off your resume. As a consequence, including a complete address isn't always required. While including phone numbers may not be a frequent practice, there really isn't any harm in listing phone numbers below your work history info, and it'll have no large adverse effect on your resume itself. Do not incorporate the contents in the table of contents if you don't want to produce a joke. Still others argue you should put that data in your cover letter after being fired. Look at using only your name or some edition of it to make it simple to identify you. The hiring manager isn't likely to devote that much time on your resume (at least in a very first go-round), so select your links wisely and just incorporate those you feel will improve your likelihood of getting hired. Be certain that your resume contains everything the employer has to be convinced that you're a fantastic match for the position. For these hirers, your resume will appear incomplete, and they could wonder if you're attempting to hide something or only lacking attention to detail. Very good luck with your work search! As an example, offering a decrease salary because the price of living wherever your address is situated is low. Sometimes people leave their address off if they're attempting to relocate and don't need to demonstrate they live from the area. It's not that companies demand the information. however, it appears like it may cause a person to wonder when it is not there. You want to create life as simple as possible for everybody who might give you a job, and providing your address would help your case. But in my professional opinion, it will help to set your address. Another reason you wish to depart from your street address off your resume is simple it's simply not needed. Unprofessional e-mail addresses are only one way of sending hiring managers the incorrect message. Because of the excellent world of social networking, an individual would believe the question of whether to include things like a photograph on your resume would be almost completely inconsequential. Some career experts recommend excluding your entire address and zip-code for many diverse reasons. But staying informed about the discussion happening behind the scenes is every bit as important so you realize how those possible employers may interpret the information that you provide. At precisely the same time, there are particular jobs where you will need to show your age (bartenders, for instance). Should You Put Address on Resume Options Double-check your phone number to make certain it is accurate. If your name, telephone number and e-mail address are at the peak of your resume for effortless contact, that will suffice. Contact information ought to be set on top of your resume. A typo in your telephone number or email address is more prevalent than you may think. Share y our bigger accommodation achievements and prove you're able to do the job larger than the additional applicants. A client referral application appears to develop into the utter most commonly used kind of referral application. The solution is it is dependent on your LinkedIn profile and resume. Here are 10 resume mistakes to be on the lookout for. Employers use layoffs all of the moment. Resumes are tricky it's sometimes hard to know exactly what things to include. Preparation, correct scheduling, smart delegation and so forth. LinkedIn on a resume isn't only commonwe highly suggest it. If you are pleased with one profession, you can't consider altering your career. Why Almost Everything You've Learned About Should You Put Address on Resume Is Wrong Moreover, it wouldn't hurt to check at sample CVs online to decide on whether you're writing it correctly or if there are fields which you have left out. Consider using your complete name in place of initials, as that may make it simpler for a recruiter to keep tabs on your resume. Names create images, and your brand is just image if you think about doing it. Have a look at free resume examples on the net and you're going to observe that headings ought to be the exact same all throughout.
